Abraham was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for God. God loved Abraham and proves it. Help preschoolers understand how to obey God with these lesson ideas.

The ideas below may help you when teaching your preschoolers a lesson about Abraham willing to sacrifice Isaac to obey God's command, and how God loved Abraham. Feel free to use these ideas to supplement your current curriculum or to make your own lesson.

Story Suggestion

Genesis 22:1-19

Game Ideas

Red Light Green Light

Directions: This is a simple game about obeying directions. Have the children line up against a wall. Pick one child to be the "traffic light," and have her stand at the opposite wall on the other side of the room. When the "traffic light" turns away from the line of kids, she is a green light, which means the children can walk towards her. When she turns back around, she is a red light, which means the children have to stop and wait for her to turn green again. The first child to touch her becomes the new "traffic light."

Only One Master

Directions: Have the children stand in a circle. Give each child an object to hold (can be different objects or the same). Start by having the children pass their object to the person on their right. Keep passing objects in a circle. When someone drops an object, they are out of the game, but their object stays in the game. Continue until there are a few players left and they have a hard time not letting any of the objects fall. Explain that while they could not juggle so many objects, we cannot have many people to answer to, and we only answer to God.

Snacks

A good snack for this lesson would be:

Edible Altars

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup peanut butter
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1/2 cup crushed corn flakes
  • 1/2 cup quick oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup dry milk
  • Chocolate sprinkles

Directions:

  1. Place the peanut butter and honey in a mixing bowl and mix well with a wooden spoon.
  2. Add the corn flakes, oatmeal and milk to the peanut butter mixture and mix well.
  3. Pinch off a small amount of the dough mixture. Roll the small amount of dough into 2-inch-long by 1/2-inch-wide logs.
  4. Place the sprinkles on the baking sheet. Roll the logs in sprinkles.
  5. Let the children stack the logs on a plate on top of one another in a building formation.

Another good snack for this lesson would be:

Good Old Fashion Smores

Ingredients:

  • Large marshmallows
  • Graham crackers
  • Chocolate candy bars

Directions:

  1. Place a large marshmallow on a graham cracker square.
  2. Place a square of chocolate on top of the marshmallow.
  3. Place the graham cracker on a baking sheet and bake at 250 degrees for about 5 minutes or until the chocolate starts to melt. It works well to bring in a toaster oven into the classroom.
  4. Remove the smore and press a second graham cracker square on top of the chocolate.
  5. Let it cool for a few minutes, and serve to the children while still slightly warm.

Art Center Ideas

Colorful Candleholder

Materials:

  • Air-drying clay (variety of colors)
  • Cookie cutters (optional)
  • Thin cardboard
  • Small candles
  • Strong glue
  • Tempera paint (various colors)
  • Paintbrushes

Directions:

Preparation: Cut the thin cardboard into 6 inch or 8 inch circles, one for each child in the class.

  1. Give each child a cardboard circle and let them paint it whatever color they like. Let the circle set aside to dry.
  2. Let the children make shapes with their air-drying clay. Cookie cutters make this craft look especially nice, but they can mold any shapes they like.
  3. Apply glue to the dried circle, and have children set their shapes on to the glue, leaving a circle in the center where the candle will go.
  4. Use a portion of the clay to wrap around the bottom of the candle. Glue the clay and candle into the center of the circle and let dry.

Abraham Coloring Page

Directions: Print out the coloring page below and have the children color their picture of Abraham and Sarah.

Suggested Prayer (or use your own)

Lord, teach us to obey you in all that we do. Your light for others to see, let it shine through. Thank you for the Bible, your Holy Word to read. Thank you most of all, God, for creating me. Amen.
