You may think of Sunday school teachers as people who only teach young children. This is certainly the case in many circumstances, but adults need them, too.

Many churches have Sunday school classes that minister to certain groups of adults such as single adults, newlyweds, married couples, and divorced adults. The requirements for teaching Sunday school to adults are not unlike those for children Sunday school teachers. You need only to commit your time and show enthusiasm about your knowledge of the Bible and biblical issues.

Qualifications for Teaching an Adult Sunday School

In all honesty, it may be difficult for you to decide whether or not you have what it takes to teach adults at your church. Many people feel that they do not have the expertise to minister to adults, but you don't have to be perfect or know every last detail about the Bible to teach. It helps to feel comfortable with your biblical and Christian knowledge for sure. And, yes adults often feel more teachable when it is by a seasoned Christian, and someone with a good reputation in the church.

There are no degrees or certificates that qualify someone as an adult Sunday school teacher. There are, however, great rewards for teaching adults, and you can be certain that those in your class will truly appreciate both your time and your effort.

Starting an Adult Sunday School Class

If you are interested in starting a Sunday school class, there are a few things to consider. First of all, think about who you want to teach. Perhaps you feel that you have a certain connection with a certain group of people. For instance, say you and your spouse have been married for many years and you would love to share your secrets to a lasting relationship with newly married couples. Perhaps you have gone through a divorce and are able to put yourself in the shoes of others going through the same situation. You may have even had a very sick child and feel that you have something to offer to other parents who have experienced this crisis. Finding the right match is often the key to success when you want to be an adult Sunday school teacher.

The Logistics of Teaching a Class

You will also want to consider the logistics of a class. Maybe you do want to start a new class. You will need to consider the meeting space, as well as times and days for your classes. Most Sunday school teachers are called so because Bible class is held on Sundays either before or after service.

Class size is important. How many do you think you will be able to have in your class? The average class size for adults is about 12 regular members with room for visitors. There are certainly cases where an average class could have up to 30 to 60 members each week. Knowing your weekly church congregation attendance might help give you an idea of how many members to expect each week. With good reason, you probably do not want to turn anyone away.

You will also want to think about what you will do if you are asked to teach an established class. This may be harder, but you can make it work if you visit the class several times and get to know the others and what they are doing in class.

Being Prepared Is Paramount to Success

You will also need to prepare for your term as a Sunday school teacher. Think about the issues that will affect those in your class and in order to make it interesting and successful, find out what matters to them. These can help you plan your classes and lead meaningful discussions that will benefit everyone. There are excellent resources in books and on the Internet for good adult Sunday school topics. Many major Christian publishers have curricula in place for adult classes, and all you need do is purchase one and study it ahead of time.

If you want to teach adults in church, you can become a success when you plan it out carefully and get to know everyone in your class. Commit your time and reap the benefits.
