Object lesson using simple objects that teach children how to be a light in this world.

The object of this lesson is to show children how to be a light to a dark world even though they may be young. The lesson explains how we do not have to do anything for the darkness to be there - it simply exists and it takes no energy or effort for it to be dark. But it does take energy and effort for there to be light and light pushes out the darkness. But it has to be an ongoing effort. The minute the light goes out, darkness encroaches.

This, of course, applies to the world of sin as well. It takes no effort to sin or allow sin to be around us. But we can be the light that pushes back sin but it requires effort on our part. We need to constantly shine our light to keep sin at bay and to be a light for the Lord.

You will need:

  • a flashlight
  • access to a light switch

Say to the children:

Look all around you. In our churches and homes we can have light at the flip of a switch. If this room were to go totally dark I could flip the switch on this flashlight and I would have light to see.

If you go out at night or forget to turn on the lights in your house you would be in darkness. What do you have to do get darkness? Actually to get dark you do not have to do anything. It is just there. But what if you want light? What do you have to do?

You might say just flip a switch and you would be right but there is more to it. The switch will not work without electricity. The energy that makes the light work and glow, that is supplied to us from generators that work hard to make the electricity.

It takes work to create light. You can do nothing and have dark. The more energy the stronger the light. As believers our lives are just like the electric lights. We can do nothing and we will be no different than anybody else. Or we can work hard at letting Jesus shine forth in us and we can light up the world around us.

Jesus told us we were to be salt and light among unbelievers. That we were to shine brightly for Him. How hard are you working to let your light shine?

Application Questions:

  1. Does it take work for there to be dark?
  2. How is sin like the darkness?
  3. Does Jesus want us to be lights?
  4. Name some ways you can be a light at home, school or play.
  5. How do you think we keep our lights "charged"? (examples - Bible reading, attending church, praying)
