Providing childcare in a church setting is an exciting opportunity. While the pay may not be high, the duties and responsibilities are very important.
Many times churches will hire a special group of babysitters or childcare providers to watch over the children of the members of the church. They are also usually required to care for the children of church workers who are busy planning or working during church events. Churches generally recognize the needs of families during these events and provide a way for those members to participate with as little disruption to their family as possible. If you are interested in working for a church in one of these childcare jobs, there are some things that you should know before you apply. Church Childcare Job RequirementsWhen you are planning to apply for a church childcare worker you will most likely be required to have some experience in providing childcare for babies and small children. While the age group of children may be diverse, it is essential that you are prepared to work with babies and toddlers as well as older children. Your background should contain some experience in this type of work. You may also be required to be very flexible in your schedule. There may be times when you are called to duty hours before an event or church meeting. You should be able to accommodate the needs of the church whenever these situations come up. It is likely that you will not be required to be a member of the church or share the beliefs of the church that you are working for. While you may not be required to share the beliefs of the church and they will not expect you to be a member, you should offer the same kind of open minded personality if you are to work within the organization. Church Childcare Job DutiesYour childcare will most likely take place in the church, therefore you will not be required to provide anything for the children other than your care. The range in ages of the children will require you to be familiar with caring for babies as well as older children. With this in mind, you should consider some of the duties that you will be required to perform. Duty #1: Because you will be caring for babies, you should be prepared to change diapers, feed, and offer your comfort. This will mean that you will be rocking babies, and holding them when there is a need. Duty #2: For older children that will be in your care, you should be familiar with the developmental requirements for children of all ages. Playing games and organizing activities for the children according to their age and developmental needs will also be a part of your duties. Duty #3: There may also be times when you are asked to provide meals and snacks to the children during the time that they are in your care. Duty #4: Depending on the particular job that you are applying for, you may be required to read to the children and offer lessons that are in keeping with the church's beliefs. When you are considering a job working for a church in a child care provider capacity, it is important to pay attention to the duties that will be required of you. Not all churches will require you to feed the children or even to offer lessons, but it is a possibility in some cases. Choose the job that you are qualified to do and that you are most comfortable with.
