Easter is a time to use crafts that help children learn the importance of the Resurrection. These crafts can be used with a Bible story or lesson plan to help teach.
Easter is one of the most important holidays in the Christian religion. When considering Christian Easter crafts for the Sunday school hour, remember to use these wonderful ideas to teach children what Easter is all about. When used in conjunction with a Sunday school lesson, these crafts can really help children remember the Resurrection. The crafts are suited for children ages 4 and up.
The Marble Cross
This craft should be completed early in the class.
What is Needed:
15 sugar cubes for each child
White glue
Scrapbook embellishment, Easter theme
Paper plate, sturdy
Assembly:
Line up 9 cubes in three rows of three. This will create the base. Glue all of these together. Be sure to glue each of the sides in the middle too, so the base is solid. Let this dry for about 15 minutes.
To assemble the cross, line four cubes up and glue the last two cubes to the third cube up from the bottom. This will make the sides of the cross. Add a dollop of glue to the center of the cross and place a small scrapbook embellishment. Let this dry for 15 minutes.
After all the pieces are completely dried, glue the cross in the center of the base. Place the cross on a sturdy paper plate. Hold it in place for a minute or two. Let it dry completely or it will fall apart when you lift it.
This cross is very pretty and if you place it on a shelf away from the children it will last for several months. It looks like marble, and the children really enjoy this craft. For those children under the age of 7, you will really want to help and supervise them.
The Flower Crown
What is Needed:
1 paper plate for each child
Construction or tissue paper
Crayons, markers, or paint
Glue
Scissors
Glitter, ribbons, or crepe paper
Assembly:
Take the paper plate and cut a slit through the center. Stop at just about an inch from the edge. Cut three more slits so they are even spread out and meet in the middle. Bend the triangle pieces that were made from the cuts up. This will look like leaves. Paint the hat green with crayons or markers. If paint is used, be sure to let it dry.
Using the tissue paper or the construction paper, cut out some pretty flowers for the hat. Let each child use her imagination and invent flowers as she likes. Glue the flowers onto the crown. Decorate the hat with glitter. Use two long pieces of crepe paper to create a beautiful ribbon.
This is a great time to speak of Jesus' crucifixion and how it relates to Good Friday. Explain the crown of thorns, but also talk of how Jesus rose from the dead three days later.
Easter Flowers
What is Needed:
Coffee filters, one or two for each child
Markers
Chenille Stems
Assembly:
Have the children color on the coffee filters. It doesn't have to be fine, exceptional drawings because this won't show up on the finished project.
Place one of the filters with the colored side down onto the table. Put the rest of the filters in a stack with the colored side up. Now, fold the coffee filter in half and, starting at the bottom, scrunch the middle up of the coffee filter. Take the chenille stem and wrap it tightly around the part that is scrunched up.
The children now have flowers to love and show off, and it doesn't take any time at all.
Teaching young children about the miracle of Easter is an exciting time of year in the life a Sunday school class, and crafts (along with a party) make it all the more fun. Remember that most children come to church dressed in fancy clothes, so be prepared with smocks or old T-shirts, if paint will be used. Have a joyous Easter.
