Games
Tonto
Directions: Seat children in a circle. One child is chosen to be "Tonto" and leaves the room. The other players choose one in the circle to the Indian chief. The Indian chief leads the others in all sorts of physical actions, such as jumping, slapping their knees, shaking their heads, etc. Then Tonto is called back into the room and stands in the center of the circle. As the circle players change from action to action, Tonto tries to find the Indian chief. He has three guesses to do so. If he succeeds, the Indian chief becomes the next Tonto and leaves the room. The first Tonto then joins the circle. If he is wrong, goes out again or another child is chosen to be Tonto.
Bobbing for Apples (without water)
Directions: Hang apples from a string to about the length where children can reach them with their mouths. Give each child a turn to try and bite an apple that is hanging without using his hands. Hands must be kept folded behind their bodies. If successful, the child can remove the apple and continue eating it. If unsuccessful after a few minutes of trying, just give the child the apple and let him eat it. Make sure each new child gets a new and clean apple by replacing it on the string.
Snacks
A good snack for this lesson would be:
Caramel Apples on a Stick
Ingredients:
Alert: Recipe may contain nuts. You can leave the nuts out of the recipe!
Adjust recipe for the number of children you have in your class.
6 small apples
1 package caramels (14 oz.)
1/2 cup chopped nuts
6 popsicle sticks
Directions:
Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Empty nuts onto the paper and divide into six equal heaps. Leave as much space as possible between each heap.
Wash and dry the apples. Twist off the stems and push popsicle sticks half way onto the apples where the stems used to be.
Melt the caramels in the microwave or a saucepan over low heat.
Dip apples in the melted caramel to coat. Use a knife to help cover the whole apple. Place each apple, stick side up, onto a heap of nuts and roll over to cover.
Refrigerate until the caramel is firm, about 1/2 hour.
Another good snack idea for this lesson would be:
Purchase Little Debbie pumpkin pies and serve with apple juice.
