Your preschoolers will discover that God made families. Use this guide to give you ideas on making a lesson fun. Use your current curriculum or make your own lesson.

The ideas below may help you teach a lesson on God Made Families. Feel free to use these ideas to supplement your current curriculum or to make your own lesson.

Story Suggestions

  • Adam and Eve (Genesis 2-4)
  • Joseph (Genesis 37-47)
  • Mary and Joseph (Luke 1:39-2)

Game Ideas

Hat and Coat Relay

Instructions: Divide the children into two teams. Give each team a hat and a coat with the same number of buttons (to make it fair). At the signal, the first player on each team puts on the hat and the coat, and buttons all of the buttons. He then has to take off the coat and the hat and pass them along to the next child in line. The first team to have each player dressed and undressed wins.

Chain Laughter

Instructions: Play three students at a time. One person lies down on the floor (you can put them on a mat or sheet). A second person puts her head on the first person's stomach. A third person puts his head on the second person's stomach. The first person says "Ha," the second person says, "Ha, ha," and the third person says, "Ha, ha, ha." Watch as these "ha, ha's" turn into genuine laughter. If you are brave, you can allow more than three students to play at a time.

Snacks

A good snack for this lesson would be gingerbread man cookies with icing. Give each child a plain gingerbread man cookie. Have several different colors of icing (white icing with a drop or two of food coloring) and let the children create a colorful coat for their gingerbread man before eating it!

Another snack suggestion could be to find fruit snacks that look like people. The students can divide them into families and then eat them!

Art Center Ideas

Family Tree

Materials:

  • Copy of a family tree for each child
  • Red apples from construction paper
  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • Glue sticks

Directions:

Preparation: Cut out apple shapes from red construction paper. Give each child enough apples for everyone in their immediate family.

  • Give each child a copy of the family tree.
  • Let them color the tree with green, brown, and red crayons.
  • Give each child the number of apples they need for each member of their immediate family.
  • Have the children write the names of their family members inside the apples (or help them write the names, if they cannot do it themselves).
  • Next, the children will glue the apples to their tree.

Celebrate Mom Craft

Materials:

  • Blank notebook
  • Crayons
  • Scissors
  • Pictures of things your mom likes (from magazines)
  • Glue stick

Directions:

  1. Decorate a blank notebook with the letters of the alphabet. Put one letter per page.
  2. Pick one attribute about your mother that starts with that letter of the alphabet. For example, for the letter G you could have a picture of a garden because your mom likes to take care of her garden.

Suggested Prayer (or do your own)

Thank you, God, for making my family. They are so dear to me. Thank you, God, for bringing us close. As close as we can be. Amen.
