When you think of going to church, you probably think of getting up each Sunday morning and actually "going," or traveling to a location, usually a chapel or church for Sunday services. However, home churches are gaining more popularity these days. Many people feel that a church is just a building and you can have meaningful and spiritual church meetings in your home. Here is a closer look at home churches and how you can start one if you are intrigued by the idea.
Simply put, a home church is a family, group or other organization that meets for church services in a private home. If you take a closer look at the actual meaning of the word "church," you will find that in the Old Testament, a church is not a place you go to worship, it is actually a group of people that study God’s word together. When you realize that you can worship God without being a member of a church per se, it puts a whole new spin on religion. You can meet with your family, close friends, or other interested people to have church at home.
There are many reasons why some people are seeking out home churches. One of the biggest reasons is their dissatisfaction with a large organized church. They may dislike the messages that are preached each week, or they may feel that they are not getting enough out of the church. When you look at church, you will see that they have bills to pay and it is run very much like a business. A home church is certainly more personalized than that and you can study the word of God however you choose. Of course, some people choose a home church because they may live too far away from a traditional church or they may not have the ability to “go” to church each Sunday. A home church then becomes a perfect option.
There is really no right or wrong way to start a home church. What you learn or study will largely depend on who will attend and their interests. If it is just you and a handful of others, you can choose the lessons you wish to study. You will run it very much like a relaxed Bible study in your home. Find a group of people in your area that may be interested in your home church and work with them to find the lessons and what will be discussed each time. Take the time to pray together and seek out God. Many home churches also use this time to reach out to the community and to have meals with one another.
