The ideas below may help you when teaching your preschoolers a lesson about how Jesus calmed a storm and how he can calm us when we are feeling anxious about anything. Feel free to use these ideas to supplement your current curriculum or to make your own lesson.
Matthew 8:23-27
Directions: Children line up horizontally at one side of the playing area. Choose a child to be "It." "It" in the center calls out "Fish, fish, come to my sea, or I will catch you swimming to me." All the children run to the opposite side, and those tagged by "It" join hands and form a net to catch the fish. Only the two ends may than tag, and the net must not be broken. Fish may swim through the net in the center and to the other side, if not tagged. The last one caught is "It" for the next game.
Directions: Set a small juice glass in a ten-quart pail. Fill the pail with water. Each child tries to drop five pennies into the glass. Anyone who is able to do this should be allowed to keep the pennies and receive a prize. Award prizes to all who can get at least two pennies in the jar.
A good snack for this lesson would be:
Directions: Make a batch of Berry Blue Jell-O and pour the Jell-O in clear plastic cups. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Take the cups out of the fridge and stick gummy fish into the Jell-O to suspend them as if they were swimming. Place the cups back into the fridge for another hour to let the Jell-O set completely.
Another good snack for this lesson would be:
Fish on the Sea
Suggested Prayer (or use your own)
God you are so great. Thank you for sending Jesus to heal our sins. The next time we feel sad, let us remember to come to you, for you will help us, too. In Jesus' name, Amen.
