Joseph was given a beautiful coat by his father. Joseph had no idea how his world was about to change. Here are some ideas for teaching this lesson to preschoolers.
The ideas below may help you teach a lesson about Joseph and his coat of many colors, along with the things that happened in his life. Feel free to use these ideas to supplement your current curriculum or to make your own lesson.
Genesis 37-47
Materials: Pillowcase, classroom items, bandanna or scarf
Directions: Place some things into the pillowcase, like a plastic spoon, a wooden block, a doll, toy car, etc. Make sure you have enough items for each child in your class. Tie the bandanna around one child's eyes so they cannot see anything. Have that child reach his hand into the pillowcase and pull out one item. Ask them to guess what object it is. If they are right keep the item out of the bag. If they are wrong, place the item back in the pillowcase and let that child try again after the other children take a turn. Keep going until all of the children have guessed an object correctly.
Materials: Large latex balloons (various colors), a dividing line (masking tape works well)
Directions: Clear a large area of your classroom (or use your church's gym, if you have one). Divide the children into two teams. The teacher is the referee. Decide how many times a team can hit the balloon and it has to go over the line before the other team gets a point and a chance to hit the balloon. Tell the children that they are to hit the balloon back and forth to the opposite team. If the balloon falls on the ground, the other team gets a point. Play to 10 points.
You can buy rainbow sugar cookies at the grocery store and serve with juice.
Another good snack idea for this lesson would be:
Ingredients: Fresh white bread, milk, food coloring
Materials: Cookie cutters, bowls, paintbrushes, a toaster oven
Directions: Pour milk into bowls. Add food coloring. Cut the bread with cookie cutters. Paint bread with colored milk. Toast painted bread.
Use a Popsicle stick to scoop out some red finger paint in a small circle onto one side each child's paper. Then, use another Popsicle stick to scoop out some blue finger pain in a small circle onto the other side of each child's paper. Now, have the children mix the two colors together in the middle of their paper and ask what color they got. Use different sheets of paper to make different color combinations.
Variation: Let the children make pictures by dipping sponges into the finger paint and pressing onto their paper.
Suggested Prayer (or use your own)
