The ideas below may help you when teaching a lesson about temptation. Feel free to use these ideas to supplement your current curriculum or to make your own lesson.
The story about Adam and Eve is a perfect place to start when talking about temptation. Read the story about Adam and Eve and explain that the two were tempted by the apple tree even though God told them not to touch it. Kids enjoy this story and it shows them that there are consequences for making bad choices.
Directions: Play this game like Hot Potato, but instead of passing the potato the children will pass an apple. Have the children sit in a circle and give one child an apple. When you play music, the children will pass the apple to one another. When the music stops, the child holding the apple is “out”. Continue until only one child remains. When the game is over, you can talk about the different things that make use feel tempted.
Directions: Before class, write down the names of as many animals that you can think of on small slips of paper. Before the game starts, tell the children that God put Adam and Eve in charge of naming all of the animals. Have a child draw a slip of paper and act out the animal. See if the other children can guess the animal.
A good snack for this lesson would be:
Fruit salad: Bring bananas, apples and oranges to make a fruit salad. Children can cut bananas and oranges using a plastic knife with supervision.
Another good snack for this lesson would be:
Apple slices, peanut butter and raisins-give each child several apple slices, a dab of peanut butter and some raisins. Let them spread the peanut butter on the apples if they choose. You can even bring a sampling of different types of apples for the kids to try.
Directions: Have the children color the paper plate completely. Have the children draw the face of a snake right in the middle. You will then help the children cut the plate into a spiral so that it will look like a coiled snake.
Directions: Help the children cut a tree trunk out of the brown construction paper and use the green construction paper to create the top of the tree. Cut the red tissue paper into small squares and have the children place one square of tissue paper on the end of a pencil, dip it in glue and place it on the tree. These will be the apples on the tree.
Dear Lord, please watch over us and help us understand temptation. Show us right and wrong and help us make good choices. Amen.
