Moses and the Burning Bush

Preschool Sunday School Lesson Ideas

Jun 6, 2007 Denise Oliveri

Imagine seeing a bush that was consumed with fire but was not burning up. Moses experienced this. Here are some ideas to teach preschoolers about Moses.

The ideas below may help you teach a lesson on Moses and the Burning Bush. Feel free to use these ideas to supplement your current curriculum or to make your own lesson.

Story Suggestion

Exodus 3-4:1-17

Game Ideas

Follow the Leader

Directions: Start the game by walking around the room doing silly things and the children have to follow you and do what you are doing. When you get back to your start position, have the next child in line become the leader, and you go to the back of the line. Continue in this way until all of the children have had a chance to be the leader.

Hot Potato

Directions: Have your children sit in a circle either in chairs or on the floor. Start a CD to play some upbeat Sunday School songs. Use a bean bag or some other small object that the children can pass around to each other easily. Have the children pass the object along as the music is playing. Once the music stops, the child holding the object is out of the game. The circle becomes smaller. The last two players are the winners.

Snacks

A good snack for this lesson would be chocolate cupcakes with red and orange icing.

Another yummy snack to go along with this lesson is orange Jello cubes on brown paper plates. Simple, but something kids love to eat. You could include strawberries or seedless red grapes, too.

Art Center Ideas

Burning Bush Craft

Materials:

  • Paper bowls
  • Glue
  • Water
  • Paint brushes
  • White construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Red and yellow tissue paper

Directions:

Preparation: Using the red and yellow tisue paper, cut into 2 inch tear drop patterns, and make several of each color per child.

  1. Give each child a white piece of construction paper and a paintbrush.
  2. Set out bowls containing a mixture of one part glue and one part water.
  3. Have the children place red and yellow tissue flames on the paper at random, overlapping the yellow and red flames.
  4. Have the children paint over the flames with the glue mixture using a paintbrush. The overlap of the yellow and red flames should produce orange flames.

Crayon Painting

Materials:

  • White cardstock paper (or poster paper)
  • Orange, green, and brown crayons
  • Broad paint brushes
  • Tempera paint in orange, green, and brown
  • Paper towels

Directions:

  1. Have the children draw a burning bush on their piece of cardstock (or poster paper). Perhaps you can have a drawing on the whiteboard to show them what it might look like. Have them add leaves to the picture, too.
  2. Next, have the children use their paint brushes to cover the piece of paper in different colors (brown for the branches, orange for the fire, and green for the leaves). Let dry.

Variation: You could use just white crayons and the picture will magically appear, but it might be hard for preschoolers to draw a picture this way.

Suggested Prayer (or use your own)

Thank you God for helping us when we need you. Thank you for keeping us safe. We love you God. In Jesus' name, Amen.
