Teaching kids biblical principles is serious to Sunday School teachers. Finding the best curriculum to do this is not always easy. Take a look at some of these tips.

When you take over as a Sunday school teacher, you will want to take a look at curriculum you can teach the class. It is important that you choose what you teach carefully and make sure that it represents the beliefs of the church and the families that are served. How do you go about choosing a good Sunday School curriculum for kids? Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Look at What the Church Provides

Many churches receive curriculum that makes it possible for just about anyone to teach a class of children. These are usually packets that are given to Sunday school teachers to give lesson ideas, activities, songs, and tips for teaching a certain lesson. If your church receives such curriculum, then it is probably a good idea for you to use that guide as a basis for your classroom. Weekly plans are given so that all ages are learning roughly the same lesson each week. Feel free to use that curriculum and find related ideas to help you expand on those lessons.

Age Appropriateness

The next thing you will want to do as you look at curriculum for Sunday school lessons are the age appropriateness of the lessons. When you are dealing with young children, you need to teach the lesson in a way so that they understand the basic principles without feeling overwhelmed. Older children need more when it comes to their lessons, so you need to make sure what you are teaching appeals to the age of your children. Some activities can be tailored to fit any age group, so these types of activities are always worth hanging on to for the future.

Consider Your Expectations and Lesson Goals

The next thing you will want to do as your choose curriculum for Sunday school is to make a list of your own expectations and lesson goals. What do you think the children need to learn? How do you expect them to learn? What kinds of lessons are “do-able” within the classroom? There are many great ideas out there to teach children about God and the Bible, but you also have to keep in mind that you have a limited amount of time with these children each week, and some children even less. Make sure you set your expectations so that you can meet your goals as a teacher.

Do Your Research

If you are the creative type, then this is the fun part. You can start looking for great ideas and activities that you can use in the class. Books, the Internet, and even other teachers can be a great source for ideas. Keep a notebook of your lesson plans and activities so that you will always have your ideas close at hand.
