The ideas below may help you when teaching a lesson about The Fiery Furnace.
Feel free to use these ideas to supplement your current curriculum or to make your own lesson.
Daniel 3: This story is about how Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced the fiery furnace, and because they relied on God, they were able to walk through the fire without getting hurt. This lesson shows children that they can trust in God during hard times and while God may not always get them out of the situation, He can show them the right path to follow and help them in times of need.
Here are a couple of games you can use to teach this Bible lesson.
Directions: For this game, you will create a walk through “flames” for the children. If you have access to a small balance beam at your church then place it on the floor. Crumple orange and red tissue paper on the floor at the sides of the balance beam. This will represent the flames in the furnace. Have the children walk on the beam and try to stay on without touching the “flames.” If you do not have a balance beam, then try using a rope or a long wooden board to sit on the floor.
Directions: This Bible lesson is a good opportunity for kids to learn about fire safety at the church. Check to see the escape route for your Sunday school classroom and talk to the kids about what to do in case of a fire. Provide simplified maps of the church and have the kids outline the route they would take in case of a fire. Walk the route with your children several times.
You may want to let your children try a variety of spicy foods for a snack. While some may not like very spicy food, you could let them try mild salsa with tortilla chips or candies such as Hot Tamales.
Another good snack for this lesson would be:
This is a snack that is traditionally eaten after roasting marshmallows over a flame. You probably will not have access to a fire at church to roast marshmallows, but you can make s’mores by placing a graham cracker with a marshmallow on top in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Top with a piece of chocolate and another graham cracker.
Directions: Have each child color and cut out the Bible person. Glue it on the paper bag to make a puppet. Use the shoebox to make a furnace. Color it black or cover it in black paper. Glue the tissue paper inside the box so it represents the flames. Let the children use the shoebox as a prop for their puppet show.
Directions: Have each child go through the magazines to find pictures of fires, fire safety ideas, tips, or even pictures of firefighters. They may find pictures of fireplaces, campfires, firefighter helmet, and fire safety ladders. Cut the pictures out and glue them on the construction paper to make a collage.
Dear Lord, I know that you will be there when I need you. You will help me through the good times and the bad, I put my trust in you. Amen.
