Valentine's Day is a lot of fun for preschoolers. It can also be a great time to teach a biblical lesson as well. It is about hearts and smiles, all things God loves.

Most preschoolers will tell you that Valentine's Day is one of the most favorite holidays of the year. Now, wisdom would say this is because of the candy and the Valentine's cards, but there are also lessons to be learned on how it can relate to the Bible. Here are a couple of cute Sunday school bulletin board ideas to help the children celebrate Valentine's Day while learning a story from the Bible.

"A Merry Hearth Doeth Good" Bulletin Board

Based on Proverbs 15:13

The Bible says that God wants people to have a happy and merry heart. It is much easier to be good and to do God's will when you are happy. However, when you are sad, you can look to God to find your "happiness" again.

Materials Needed

  • Background of pink paper - either construction paper, wrapping paper, or sheets of tissue paper
  • Red scalloped border - found at any craft store
  • Large red heart - made out of construction paper (an old Valentine's box of chocolates makes a perfect template)
  • 1 box of converstation heart candy for each child - usually become available in January
  • Small picture of each child - taken the week before you plan to put up the bulletin board
  • Letters or stencils that spell out "A Merry Heart Doeth Good"

How to Assemble the Bulletin Board

  1. Using the pink paper, completely cover the bulletin board.
  2. Place the red border around the edges.
  3. In the middle of the board, place the large red heart. Put letters in an arch above the red heart. If you like, you can add the words "Merry Heart" to the center of the red heart.
  4. Take each box of the conversation heart candy and cut out the front. Using a glue stick, attach a child's picture to on the back of the box front. Make sure the picture shows through the window. Place these "picture frames" randomly on the bulletin board. Use the actual candy as a decoration for the classroom by placing them in a heart-shaped candy bowl.

Giving the Bulletin Board Meaning

Talk to the children about the bulletin board and why God wants them to be happy. Give the children a chance to tell ways that God makes people happy. Also discuss ways that the children can make other people feel happy, too. Encourage conversation and smiles!

Valentine's Card to Jesus Bulletin Board

A unique Valentine's Day Sunday school bulletin board is based upon the tradition of trading Valentine's Day cards with others. Get with the other Sunday school teachers in your church (or other churches) and ask that the class to write a Valentine's Day card to Jesus.

Materials Needed

  • Boxes of cute Valentine’s Day cards
  • Red or pink background - construction paper or wrapping paper
  • Red heart cutouts for the border
  • Valentines Day card envelopes, preferably red or pink

How to Assemble the Bulletin Board

  • Have each child sign a Valentine's Day card and write a short note to Jesus on it the week before you want to decorate the bulletin board.
  • Place the background up on the board.
  • Arrange the hearts in a border around the edge.
  • Place several envelopes on the bulletin board in no particular order.
  • Attach the children's Valentine's Day cards on the board. Make sure the cards are able to be opened and read.

Giving the Bulletin Board Meaning

This is a great time to explain to the children why they must let Jesus know they love him. Refer to Romans 3:25 as the basis for this discussion. The children will love reading others' cards and seeing the special messages sent to Jesus.

Valentine's Day is just oozing with love and good feelings. Celebrating this special day in a preschool Sunday school classroom just makes sense. God is love, and that is the whole reason for teaching young children about Him.
