Winter is a wonderful time for children. The snow, the sleds, the fuzzy mittens, and the warmth of a fire. Let's not forget about a lesson plan for this time of year!

Teaching children that winter is the time for everything to rest before starting anew in the spring is a great way to explain to preschoolers where the leaves and the grass have gone. Winter makes the perfect way to teach preschoolers what patience means. Learn some fun ideas for winter that you can use to make a lesson in your preschool Sunday school.

Explain to the children that everything they want does not come immediately, and sometimes you must wait for the things you really want. This is often a hard concept for a preschooler to understand. Teaching the children that the Lord wants us to wait patiently for Him is the main thought to this lesson.

Winter Preschool Bible Story

Psalms 37:7 - "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him."

Winter Game Idea

Throwing the Smile

In this game, the children are not allowed to smile, but there will probably be lots of giggling and laughing.

Have everyone sit in a circle. Be sure all the children can see each other. One player gets to start the game by smiling as wide as they can. The other children cannot smile. Now the child that is smiling will "wipe" the smile off of their face and throw it to another child. This child "catches" it and puts it on their face. If one of the children begins laughing, they are out this round of the game. The child that can remain very somber is the winner! The younger children are often the first out of this game, but they sure have a good time getting there.

Winter Craft Idea

Winter Snowman

Materials Needed:

  • Cotton balls
  • Glue
  • Marker
  • Six-Inch round circles of white, heavy duty construction paper

Directions: Have the children count out three cotton balls, if they are able to. Help them put a drop of glue onto two of the cotton balls. Stack the cotton balls to make a snow man. Use the marker to draw eyes, and a smiling mouth. Glue the bottom cotton ball to a round piece of white construction paper. Pull apart some of the cotton balls. Gently smear a small amount of glue (glue stick works best) on the construction paper. Let the children place some of the separated cotton onto the paper. Now it looks like the snow man is sitting in a fluffy white area of snow.

Winter Snack Idea

Along the same lines as the winter craft, making cute marshmallow snowman will melt your preschoolers' hearts.

Materials needed:

  • Large marshmallows
  • Gumdrop candy
  • Pretzel Sticks
  • Small tubes of icing

Directions: Have the children push three large marshmallows onto a pretzel stick. Push a gumdrop into the top marshmallow for a hat. Next, help the children use icing to make the eyes and mouth. If you can get these made without the children eating all of the marshmallows, consider yourself lucky.

Winter Prayer Suggestion

Dear God, thank you for the snow so white, thank you for the day and night. Help me, God, to always no, just how much you love me so.

This Sunday school lesson should be a big hit with your preschoolers. You can also try to adapt some of these ideas for a curriculum that you are currently using. Have fun with it.
